There are many important presidents who left their footprints in the histoıy of tl1e Grand Bazaar. Although the Grand Bazaar has an ordinary set of regulations, tl1e aud1ority that it gains from its traditions has always made the Bazaar’s impoıtance felt. The Grand Bazaar Tradesmen Association has always been the first place to go, when there is a problem from the restrooıns to the streets, from blackouts to broken windows. However, The Association has never had a straight budget. It is a assodation d1at no one pays their monthly dues to, but everyone expect the service from.
During d1e big fıre of 1954, the services that Mehmet Bey had provided as the president should never be forgotten. Faruk Darende, a jeweler from Kastamonu, had always been a popular president and has always been remembered with his services. The Private Security Organization, which was established during his time, at least kept the beggars and the peddlers outside the Bazaar. Again, as a result of his and his friends’ voluntary services, the Bazaar had its own fire truck that was a necessity for the Bazaar, for which the fire has always been a threat. The health dinic is not only serving the tradesmen, but also to tl1e public. When Dr. Hasan Fırat became the president, he had done revolutions in almost everything. During his time, Grand Bazaar was no longer a hidden place, but a place that often took its place in the media. For the fırst time in its history, the Grand Bazaar had an advertisement in an international magazine. Most of the Bazaar’s roads were remodeled, and in order to dean the smoothened roads, modem deaning devices were pur- chased. Other than its regular work ours, the Bazaar became a place where premieres, live TV programs and private dinners took place. The Bazaar, which had its own website and hosted many fashion shows, started to be seen on Turkish media as well as a number of international TV channels, including CNN. The Bazaar started to make the amount of adveıtisement that the State Department of Tourism was making by spending millions of dollars, simply by using its own values in the right way. Of course, the services of other presidents and board members should never be forgotten. Oktay Aslan, Metin Benşin, Mustafa Pekcanattı, Levent Güçer and Al1met Şengör were among the tradesmen who spent most of their times in d1e service of the Grand Bazaar. It was during time of Levent Güçer when for the first time, Grand Bazaar had big billboards on the international arrivals seetion of Atatürk Airport, along with maps in different languages which aimed to attract international tourists. Although it did not continue for very long, it was one of d1e major advertisement projects. One of the Küçükçekmece’ s first mayors, Hüdai Bukağılı and the famous actor , Önder Somer, were among the presidents of the Grand Bazaar and they also made major contributions during their terms.
